NEW ORLEANS, La. - Ron Bazil, the head coach of Tulane University's track and field teams, has been selected to coach Team USA in two upcoming international competitions.
Bazil, in his seventh season at the helm of the Green Wave, will be the head coach for the United States in a July meet against Great Britain in Glasgow. He will also guide the U.S. at the IAAF World Cup in Madrid in September.
"Anytime you get selected to coach a national team, it is a great honor," Bazil said. "It is a chance to interact with our country's best athletes."
Bazil is no stranger to the international track scene. He has coached on the international circuit for 30 years. He was appointed as an assistant coach for the United States at the 2001 World Indoor Championships. However, because Tulane had student-athletes competing at the NCAA Championships, he had to turn down the honor.
Bazil's first major international assignment came in 1971 when he coached Team USA in a dual meet against the Soviet Union.
During his seven years guiding the Green Wave program, Bazil has guided the Wave to 18 top three finishes in Conference USA cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field championships.
The Green Wave will open its 2002 Indoor Track season on Saturday, January 26 at the LSU Purple Tiger Invitational.
