Kogan and Westerberg Lead Green Wave in Tulane Invitational

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane University Men's Tennis Invitational opened to perfect weather on Friday morning at the Goldring Tennis Stadium. The tourney features seven schools; in addition to Tulane, Louisiana-Lafayette, LSU, Middle Tennessee State, UNO, San Diego State and Southern Miss are competing in the event.

The action begins on Saturday morning at 8:30 p.m. A highlight of Saturday's action will be Tulane's Michael Kogan, ranked No. 17 in the country, battling his teammate Victor Romero, who is No. 39 in the nation. That match will begin at 2:30 p.m. Mattias Westerberg and Jorge Lievano will also be in action I the top flight singles at 2:30.
On Friday, Tulane posted five victories in the top ranked singles flight. Kogan defeated Middle Tennessee State's Michael Staniak, 6-4, 6-2, in the opening round; and followed with an impressive 6-2, 6-1 win over LSU's Bryan Fisher, who is ranked No. 68 in the nation.
Westerberg, meanwhile, upended Fisher as well, with a comeback effort, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4. The Wave senior also topped Jason Hazley from LSU, 6-3, 6-3.
Tulane's Romero had a straight-set victory, 6-4, 6-2, over Hazley, but found San Diego State's Oliver Maiberger to be too much to handle as he fell, 7-6, 6-4. Maiberger is ranked No. 9 in the nation.
In the #1 singles flight, Tulane's Hannu Piiroinen played the first match of the day for the Green Wave, defeating UL-Lafayette's Michael Tarkowski, 7-5, 6-1. However, Piiroinen was sent to the consolation bracket by Middle Tennessee State's Kirk Jackson, 6-0, 3-6, 1-6.
Goran Vasiljevic also suffered a lost for the Wave, falling in the #1 singles flight to Victor Loven from UNO, 6-4, 6-3. Vasiljevic came back with a victory over UL-Lafayette's Ivan Kovulev, 6-4, 6-3. He will continue consolation bracket action at 2 p.m. against Middle Tennessee's Brandon Allen.
Other Green wave action on Saturday will include Piiroinen playing a back-draw match against Nicolas Cateret of Southern Miss at 11 a.m, while doubles action also begins. The team of Vasiljevic and Lievano, as well as the Piiroinen-Westerberg combo will both be in action at 4 p.m.
The Invitational has three flights for both singles and doubles. The top flight in singles and doubles will be a round-robin event featuring players competing for national rankings. Singles players are guaranteed four matches in the round-robin format.
The "#1" and "#2" Flights are traditional brackets divided according to skill levels.
This weekend's event is free of charge and concessions are available for fans. Results for Saturday's matches will be posted on www.TulaneGreenWave.com after each the day's matches are completed at approximately 9 p.m.
