Vasiljevic Splits Matches at Region III Championship

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Tulane University junior Goran Vasiljevic (Varmo, Switzerland) won his opening match, but dropped his second match, on Thursday in the qualifying round of the 2002 Omni Hotels Region III Indoor Championships at the University of Kentucky.
The Wave has four other individuals in action at the tournament on Friday in the round of 128.
Senior Jorge Lievano (Bucaramanga, Columbia) will play at 8 p.m. against Ruben Zrihen from UAB, junior Hannu Piiroinen (Tampere, Finland) battles Pfungwa Mahfu from Florida A&M at 9:30 a.m., and senior Mattias Westerberg goes up against Troy State's Daniel Quincarro at 11 a.m.
In the afternoon, at 12:30 p.m., senior and ninth-seeded Victor Romero (Atizapan, Mexico) will play in the round of 64 against the winner of the Rodrigo Minozzo (Auburn) and Jens Pilgram-Larsen (Vanderbilt) match. Romero had a first-round bye.
Tulane's Michael Kogan (Kfar-Saba, Israel), ranked No. 17 in the country, was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to injury.
On Thursday, Vasiljevic defeated LSU's Rafael Corazza, 7-5, 6-3, in the first round of qualifying. However, he lost to Vanderbilt's Lewis Smith, 4-6, 6-7, in the second round, failing to qualify.
