Romero Advances at Region III Championships

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Tulane University senior Victor Romero (Atizapan, Mexico), ranked No. 39 in the nation, had a straight set victory to advance to the round of 32 at the 2002 Omni Hotels Region III Indoor Championships at the University of Kentucky on Friday.
Romero, who had a first-round bye, defeated Rodrigo Minozzo from Auburn, 6-4, 6-1. He will play Tennessee's Simon Rea on Saturday, hoping to reach the round of 16.
Tulane senior Mattias Westerberg (Lulea, Sweden) won his opening match, defeating Daniel Quincarro from Troy State, 6-1, 6-4. However, Westerberg was defeated in the round of 64 by Alabama's Maxim Belski, who holds the No. 30 ranking in the country.
Also falling in first round matches for the Wave were senior Jorge Lievano (Bucaramanga, Columbia) and junior Hannu Piiroinen (Tampere, Finland). Lievano was upended by UAB's Ruben Zrihen, 2-6, 6-1, 2-6. Piiroinen lost to Pfungwa Mahfu from Florida A&M, 6-2, 5-7, 1-6.
Tulane has two piars in action in the doubles draw this evening. Vasiljevic and Lievano play at 6:30 p.m., while Piiroinen and Westerberg play at 8 p.m. Results for those matches will be available on Saturday at www.TulaneGreenWave.com, or late Friday evening at www.UKAthletics.com.
