LEXINGTON, Ky. - Tulane University's unheralded doubles team of senior Jorge Lievano (Bucaramanga, Columbia) and junior Goran Vasiljevic (Varmo, Switzerland) advanced to the quarterfinals before losing at the 2002 Omni Hotels Region III Indoor Championships at the University of Kentucky on Sunday.
Lievano and Vasiljevic, who had played just two official matches together prior to this tournament, both losses, rolled to three victories at the Region III Championships. The Green Wave pair expected to make noise at the tourney featured junior Michael Kogan (Kfar-Saba, Israel) and senior Victor Romero (Atizapan, Mexico). That duo was seeded No. 1 in the tourney, but was forced to withdraw due to a Kogan injury.
On Sunday, Lievano and Vasiljevic defeated the No. 37 ranked team in the country, Daniel Klemetz and Kirk Jackson from Middle Tennessee State, 9-7, to advance to the quarters. However, Geoff Hiscox and Stephen Mitchell from Alabama upended the Green Wave pair, 8-2, in an afternoon match.
Tulane will be back in action starting Friday at the LSU Invitational.
