MONROE, La. (AP) - J.P. Losman passed for 300 yards and four touchdowns to lead Tulane past winless Louisiana-Monroe 52-9 Saturday night.
Lynaris Elpheage intercepted two passes for Tulane (3-3), returning one 62 yards for a touchdown. He now has six interceptions on the season. His second interception set up Tulane's final touchdown, an 8-yard run by Jovon Jackson.
Louisiana-Monroe (0-5) committed seven turnovers, four interceptions and three fumbles. The mistakes led to 28 Green Wave points.
"Regardless of who you are playing, turnovers are the name of the game," said Tulane head coach Chris Scelfo. "If you turn the ball over, you'll have trouble winning."
All of the Indians' points came on three first-half field goals by Tyler Kuecker.
Losman threw touchdowns of 13, 10, 2 and 43 yards, the longest going to Carl Davis in the third quarter to give Tulane a 38-9 lead. Davis finished with four catches for 111 yards.
Louisiana-Monroe led 3-0 at the end of the first quarter on a 21-yard field goal by Kuecker. The Indians began the scoring drive with a halfback pass on their first play from scrimmage, with Floyd Smith hitting Mack Vincent for 29 yards.
"I was proud of our defense, holding them out of the end zone," said Scelfo. "We bent sometimes, but never broke,"
Losman's first TD pass, a 13-yarder to Tristan Smith, gave Tulane a 6-3 lead after Tulane missed the extra point. But Louisiana-Monroe tied the game at 6 early in the second quarter on a 35-yard field goal by Kuecker.
Tulane answered with a 1-yard touchdown run by Mewelde Moore and a 10-yard scoring pass from Losman to Cletus McGee to take the lead for good.
Moore led Tulane with 82 yards rushing on 23 carries.
Bryant Jacobs led Louisiana-Monroe with 119 yards on 13 carries, including a 32-yard run. Indians quarterback Steven Jyles completed 19 of 46 passes for 210 yards. Tulane sacked him three times.
"This is a good game for us," Scelfo finished. "We needed it. It got us back even."
