NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane University women's golf team claimed the first Top 20 ranking in the history of the program, claiming the No. 16 spot in the latest Golfweek poll released Tuesday morning.
The Green Wave, which was ranked a then-school best No. 24 going into the 2002-03 season, claimed Tuesday's lofty ranking after finishing fourth in last weekend's Franklin Street Trust/Tar Heel Invitational where Tulane defeated several nationally ranked teams. In two fall tournaments, Tulane has defeated three Top 10 programs and 14 teams ranked in the Top 50.
"This is a huge honor, and I'm very proud for our University and our team," head coach Sue Bower said. "This just shows you how hard our girls worked in the summer and how dedicated they are to having a successful season. We realize that it's still early in the season, though, and we're far from satisfied."
The Green Wave's ranking comes after a breakthrough 2001-02 season where the Green Wave shot a school-record 304.7 average per round, tallying five Top 5 finishes, including a tournament win at the Green Wave Women's Golf Classic and a second-place finish at the Conference USA Championships. Tulane advanced to the NCAA Regionals for the second time in team history and finished just one stroke shy of reaching the National Championship with an 894 to finish ninth in the 21-team East Regional.
Through two tournaments this fall, Tulane is averaging 301.0 strokes per round, including a team-best 294 in the third round of the Tar Heel Invitational on Sunday. Sophomore Lindsay Hulwick leads the team with a 74.00 average, and junior Carolin Landmann is close behind with a 74.83 average.
The Green Wave returns to action on Friday when the team travels to The Sunshine State to participate in the USF/Beacon Woods Invitational hosted by the University of South Florida at Beacon Woods Country Club in Bayonet, Fla.
