KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - The Tulane Green Wave, which won its first tournament outside the city of New Orleans three weeks ago in Tampa, claimed its second tournament win of the fall season Tuesday with a come-from-behind victory at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate at the par 72, 5,873-yard Kiawah Island Oak Point Golf Course in Kiawah Island, Fla.
Trailing Kansas State by six strokes after the first 27 holes of the tournament were completed Monday, the Green Wave came out firing on Tuesday, posting a tournament-low six-under par 282 for the second round and coming in at three-under par 285 for the final 18. Tulane's final two rounds were the lowest by any team in the tournament, but the key to Tulane's win according to head coach Sue Bower, was Monday's final nine holes.
"I think the key to the tournament was the third nine we played yesterday," Bower said. "It was rainy with tough conditions and we shot two under as a team and picked up a lot of strokes. Then we played our tails off today. We played very smart golf off the tee and learned from yesterday's mistakes. It's nice to finish the fall season with a win and there is definitely a lot of enthusiasm running through our team."
The Green Wave, which picked up the fourth tournament win in the history of the program, defeated Kansas State by two strokes, while third place Oklahoma was 14 strokes back in the 17-team field.
Individually, all five Tulane players posted tremendous scores Tuesday, led by freshman Liliana Alvarez, who finished fourth in the event after completing her round of 71 in the morning and adding a four-under par 68 in the third round. She finished at even-par 216 for the tournament, while teammate Carolin Landmann, the Conference USA women's golfer of the month for October, was one stroke back at 217. Landmann had rounds of 69 and 73 on the final day. Lindsay Hulwick gave Tulane three golfers in the top 10 as she tied for seventh, one stroke behind Landmann at 218 after a pair of 71 in the tournament's final two rounds. Sophomore Alexis Wooster carded a 71 and a 73 Tuesday to finish in a tie for 12th at five-over par 221.
"It's fun to see where our team has the potential to be come May," Bower said. "We set big goals at the start of the year, but we've already exceeded all of those. During the offseason, we'll have to redefine those, because we'll enter spring as one of the top 15 teams in the country."
The Green Wave returns to action at the first Tulane Invitational, a combined men's and women's collegiate event to be held at English Turn Golf and Country Club February 10-11, 2003.
