FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Tulane University senior Solomon Kandie (Nairobi, Kenya) surpassed the NCAA Provisional qualifying time in the mile run on Friday at day one of the Tyson Invitational at the University of Arkansas.
Kandie's time of 4:04.90 earned him a sixth place finish at the meet, which featured many of the top programs and runners in the nation. The event was billed as a preview of the NCAA Indoor Championships, which will be held at the same track on March 8th and 9th.
In addition to Kandie, senior Clement Abai (Port Moresby, New Guinea) recorded a persona-best in the 800 with a time of 1:52.81. That mark was the third-best in school history and earned him sixth place in the event.
The Green Wave women also had strong performances in the first day of action. Freshman Helmi Leppanen (Kerava, Finland) showed her skills once again with the shot put, tossing it 46-09.50, second in school history only to her own record-setting put last weekend. Freshman Moji Alade (Bakersfield, Calif.) had a shot put distance of 37-10.50, the fourth-best throw in school history.
In the mile run, Green Wave senior Katrina Gemmell (Plamerston North, New Zealand) posted a time of 4:54.57 to earn sixth place. She was followed immediately by teammate Eva Lustigova (Liberec, Czech Republic), who took seventh in 4:55.53.
The Wave is back in action at the second and final day of the Tyson Invitational on Saturday.
