Solomon Kandie Wins 3,000 at LSU Invitational

BATON ROUGE, La. - Tulane University senior Solomon Kandie (Nairobi, Kenya) posted the second-best time in school history to win the 3,000-meter run at the LSU Twilight Invitational on Friday evening.

Kandie's time of 8:22.88 is less than a second slower than the 8:22.06 posted by Amos Kipyegon in 1998.

Other strong performances for the Green Wave men were turned in by junior Anthony Lagat (Eldama-Ravine, Kenya), who was fourth in the 3,000 and sophomore Joshua Johnson (Cola, S.C.), who finished fourth in the triple jump with a season-best leap of 49-03.75.

For the Tulane women, freshman Ellen Vollmers (Orono, Maine) matched her own school record in the pole vault with a jump of 9-06.25. Freshman Helmi Leppanen (Kerava, Finland) earned a third-place finish in the shot put, while sophomore Eva Lustigova (Liberec, Czech Republic) was third in the 800. Sophomore Sheena Garwood (Brooklyn, N.Y.) posted a personal-best time in the 800 to finish in fourth place.

Next up for the Green Wave will be the Conference USA Indoor Championships in Bloomington, Ind., on Friday and Saturday.
