Green wave Contingent Shows Well at USM

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Tulane University opened its outdoor track season with eight student-athletes competing at the Southern Miss Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Four Green Wave freshmen women turned in impressive performances at the meet. Helmi Leppanen (Kerava, Finland) won two events, Jelena Jurlina (Zadar, Croatia) and Moji Alade (Bakersfield, Calif.) each set school records and Megan Greeley (Foxboro, Mass.) made her Green Wave debut with a second-place finish.
Jelena Jurlina (Zadar, Croatia) threw the discus 159-06 to establish a new record, while Moji Alade (Bakersfield, Calif.) established a record in the hammer throw at 139-06. Leppanen won the javelin and the triple jump.
Jurlina's throw in the discus took first place, while Alade followed her with a fourth-place toss of 127-03. Alade's hammer throw was good enough for second place at the meet. Leppanen led a sweep by the Wave in the javelin, winning the event with a throw of 145-04. Greeley was second at 137-02 and Jurlina took third at 135-06.
For the Wave men, freshman Eric Hambidge (Mystic, Conn.) earned third in the javelin with a throw of 173-04. Also competing for the men were juniors Grant Whittaker (Blue Bell, Pa.) and Adam Leskis (Spokane, Wash.), sophomore Ryan Gallagher (New Orleans, La.) and freshman Will Landry (New Iberia, La.).
The Wave is back in action on Saturday and Sunday at the UNO Invitational.
