BLACKSBURG, Va. - Playing without No. 3 player Mattias Westerberg (Lulea, Sweden), Tulane University was upended, 4-3, by Brown University in men's tennis action on Saturday afternoon at Virginia Tech University.
The Green Wave, ranked No. 22 in the nation, drops to 12-6 with the defeat. Westerberg suffered a minor injury during his second flight doubles match, but could not play singles. The Wave's customary No. 3 singles player, Westerberg has a 10-2 mark this spring in singles action.
Tulane jumped out in front with the doubles point, but dropped four of the six singles' match to fall. Sophomore Michael Kogan (Kfar-Saba, Israel) and junior Victor Romero (Atizapan, Mexico), who are ranked No. 8 in the country in pairs play, had an 8-2 victory at top-flight doubles. Junior Jorge Lievano (Bucaramanga, Columbia) and sophomore Hannu Piiroinen (Tampere, Finland) had an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles to clinch the point for the Wave.
In singles, Kogan and Lievano had wins at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively. However, Romero, Piiroinen and senior Alexandre Dion (Paris, France) all lost tough battles in three sets as the Bears out-battled the Green Wave
The Wave returns to action on Tuesday afternoon, playing at state-rival Louisiana-Lafayette.
