NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's tennis team picked up wins at three singles matches but could not pull off the upset as the Green Wave dropped a 4-3 decision to Conference USA rival TCU at the Goldring Tennis Center on Saturday.
Tulane, ranked 61st in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) polls, drops to 7-4 overall. TCU, ranked 31st by the ITA, improves to 10-3 overall.
TCU jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by claiming wins at two of the three doubles positions. The Green Wave's lone doubles victory came at the No. 2 spot, where Julie Morris and Ana Saaibi posted an 8-4 win over TCU's Saber Pierce and Brenna Schackelford. TCU posted wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles however to take the doubles point.
The two teams split six singles matches, taking three points each, but TCU's win in the doubles portion lifted them to the 4-3 victory. The Green Wave, playing three ranked TCU players in the top half of the line-up, were able to post a pair of wins against ranked opponents. Maria Ivanov recorded a 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 win over TCU's 96th-ranked Katrin Gaber at No. 2 singles, while Joyce Bergman posted a win over 112th-ranked Saber Pierce on Court 3 when Pierce defaulted in the third set.
Lucy Wood also gave Tulane a singles win, posting a 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Ivonne Andrade at the No. 6 spot. However, TCU took home wins at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 5 singles to earn the dual match win. TCU's Paty Aburto, ranked 99th by the ITA, was a 6-0, 6-3 winner over Julie Morris at No. 1 singles, while Rosa Perry posted a 6-4, 7-6 win over Tulane's Ana Saaibi at the No. 4 spot. TCU clinched the match at No. 5 singles when Karla Mancinas turned in a 7-6, 7-5 win over Tulane's Maiko Cook.
