No. 31 Tulane Wins Fourth Straight Men's Tennis Match

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University, ranked No. 31 in the nation, closed the 2002 regular season with a 6-1 victory over Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday afternoon at the Goldring Tennis Stadium. It is the fourth straight win for the Wave and its ninth in a row over a Louisiana opponent.
The Green Wave improves to 16-6 with the victory.
Tulane picked up the doubles point with wins at the top two flights. ULL defaulted at third doubles.
In singles action, the Wave won four matches in straight sets and picked up a default win at No. 6. Sophomore Michael Kogan (Kfar-Saba, Israel), who is ranked No. 23 in the nation, earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Anthony Blache at No. 1 singles. Kogan is now tied with junior Jorge Lievano (Bucaramanga, Columbia) for the team lead in singles victories with 15. Lievano did not play singles on Saturday.
Junior Victor Romero (Atizapan, Mexico), ranked No. 67 in the country, notched a 6-3, 6-2 victory at second singles, while junior Mattias Westerberg (Lulea, Sweden) tallied a 6-4, 6-2 triumph at No. 3. Hannu Piiroinen (Tampere, Finland) logged a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5.
Tulane looks to defend its Conference USA Championship next weekend in Louisville. The Wave will open action on Thursday in the tournament.
