HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Tulane University women's golf team shot a 299 and had three players finish in the Top 15, but it was not enough to hold off top-seeded TCU as the Green Wave finished second at the 2002 Conference USA Championship at the Hattiesburg Country Club.
Freshman Alexis Wooster fired an even-72 to finish fourth overall with a four-over par 220, and sophomore Carolin Landmann was one stroke back with a 221 to finish tied for fifth. Senior Marcela Gonzalez shot a two-over 74 to finish tied for 12th with a 225. TCU was too strong, though, firing a tournament-low 290 in the final round to win the title with a team 886.
"We certainly didn't lose it," head coach Sue Bower said. "TCU came out and won it. They played wonderful golf all day long. My girls got off to a rocky start, but managed their games down the stretch and finished with a solid runner-up Conference USA finish."
Freshman Lindsay Hulwick finished 20th in the tournament with a 229 (70-79-80) and junior Kathy Schafer rounded out the Green Wave scorers, finishing tied for 31st (82-74-79=235).
Tulane finished three-strokes behind the Horned Frogs with an 889, and nine strokes ahead of third-placed South Florida which shot an 898. Memphis was fourth (909), followed by UAB (913) while Southern Miss and Louisville tied for sixth (915). East Carolina finished eighth (922) and Cincinnati rounded out the competition with a 952.
The Horned Frogs' Brooke Tull earned the C-USA Individual Championship with a one-under par 215, and South Florida's Kelly Martin was one stroke back with an even 216. Cindy Pasechnik of Louisville finished third with a one-over par 217, followed by Wooster and Landmann. Landmann finished the competition tied with UAB's Marika Pluta.
TCU earned Conference USA's automatic berth in the NCAA Regionals, but with a strong showing at the conference championship, Bower feels her team's season is not done yet.
"Based on the consistency Tulane has played with throughout the spring, I feel we deserve a bid to the NCAA Regionals," Bower said. "I'll give the team a couple of days off and get back to being regular students, and then on Wednesday, we'll get back to practice in anticipation of going to the postseason."
Postseason bids will be announced one week from Monday, and will be played May 9-11 in Baton Rouge, La., Stanford, Calif., East Lansing, Mich., and Seattle, Wash.
