Kogan and Romero Ousted at NCAA Singles Championships

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Tulane University's entries in the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championships both lost in the opening round on Wednesday at the Texas A&M Tennis Center.
Both players qualifed for the 64-individual tournament, but both also drew difficult first round draws.
Sophomore Michael Kogan (Kfar-Saba, Israel), ranked No. 22 in the nation, fell to Minnesota's Harsh Mankad, 6-1, 7-6. Mankad is ranked No. 3 in the nation and entered the tourney with a 24-4 record. Kogan drops to 32-10 this year with the loss.
In addition, Green Wave junior Victor Romero (Atizapan, Mexico), ranked No. 58, was upended by 17th-ranked Oliver Maiberger from San Diego State, 6-3, 6-3. Romero drops to 20-12, while Maiberger goes to 27-9.
Tulane's duo will still compete in the 34-team Doubles Championship which begins Thursday afternoon. However, the Wave received another unfriendly draw. Kogan and Romero, ranked No. 19 in doubles, will open play in the doubles tourney against the top-ranked tandem in the country, Marcin Matkowski and Jean-Julien Rojer from UCLA. Kogan and Romero own an impressive 24-3 record entering the tourney, while the UCLA team is 36-9 this year. UCLA's team has just one win in its last five matches, with a pair of losses and two unfinished matches. Kogan and Romero have won eight straight matches.
With a first round win, Tulane's two will battle the winner of a match between Utah's David Mercier and Nicholas Yip (No. 23) and Auburn's Andrew Colombo and Mark Kovacs (No. 27).
