COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Tulane University's doubles combo of sophomore Michael Kogan (Kfar-Saba, Israel) and junior Victor Romero (Atizapan, Mexico) battled hard for two sets, but could not solve the hard-hitting combo of Andrew Colombo and Mark Kovacs from Auburn, as they lost 7-5, 7-5 in the second round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Doubles Championships on Friday at the Texas A&M Tennis Center.
Kogan and Romero, ranked No. 19 in the nation, had their nine-match winning streak snapped and fall to 25-4 on the year. Colombo and Kovacs, ranked No. 27 in the country, improve to 26-9 and advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals.
The Wave combo had upset the No. 1-ranked doubles team in the country on Thursday with a 6-7, 6-3, 6-4 victory over UCLA's Marcin Matkowski and Jean-Julien Rojer.
The loss closes another successful season for the Tulane men's tennis program. The Green Wave finished second in Conference USA and advanced to the NCAA Team Championship for the sixth year in a row. In addition to qualifying for the NCAA Doubles Championship, Kogan and Romero each participated in the 64-player Singles Championship.
Kogan repeated as the Conference USA Player of the Year and was also named the Louisiana Player of the Year for the second year in a row. Romero was named First Team All-Conference, while junior Mattias Westerberg (Lulea, Sweden) collected All-League Third team recognition.
