Helmi Leppanen Finishes 15th at NCAA Championships

BATON ROUGE, La. - Tulane University freshman Helmi Leppanen (Kerava, Finland), the only entry for the Green Wave women's track team, finished 15th in the javelin on Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at LSU's Bernie Moore Stadium.
Leppanen threw the javelin 154 feet, three inches in the event. Her personal best is a school record 165 feet, seven inches, set at the Conference USA Championship earlier this month. The winner at the national championships was Serene Ross from Purdue who had a distance of 195-08.
Tulane's final competitor will be senior Solomon Kandie (Nairobi, Kenya), who will compete in the finals of the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday evening at 8:45 p.m.
Kandie set a school record in the preliminary heats of the steeplechase on Wednesday, recording a time of 8:38.73. He has twice earned All-America honors in the steeplechase; his top finish was a third place effort at the 2000 NCAA Outdoor Championships.
