2001 Outdoor: Earned Conference USA Athlete of the Year honors for the second year in a row after winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 5,000-meter run and placing second in the 1,500. Followed that by earning All-America honors in the steeplechase with an eighth-place effort at NCAA[apos]s. Broke his own school record in the steeplechase with a 8:39.21 effort at the Stanford Relays. Posted a personal-best time of 14:28.28 in the 5,000 at the Alabama Relays.
2001 Indoor: Tulane[apos]s top runner in the one-mile and 3,000-meter runs. Finished third in the 3,000 at the C-USA Championship and fourth in the mile.
2000 Cross Country: Earned Conference USA Runner of the Year honors after winning the league championship with a clocking of 24:32.5 over the 8K course. Earned all-district honors and qualified for the NCAA National Championship by finishing sixth at the NCAA South Central Regional, running the 10K course in 31:22.2. Also won the SLU Invitational. Earned All-Louisiana honors.
2000 Outdoor: Earned All-America honors after equaling the school[apos]s best-ever finish at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a third-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Also earned Conference USA Athlete-of-the-Year honors after winning the steeplechase and 1,500 meters and finishing second in the 5,000 to claim high-point scorer honors at the conference meet. Named the Louisiana Newcomer of the Year.
2000 Indoor: Was Tulane[apos]s top runner in the mile and the 3,000 meters. A provisional qualifier in the mile with a career-best time of 4:04.88 at the adidas/Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind. Also recorded his career-best 3,000-meter time of 8:25.23.
1999 Cross Country: Was the top Tulane finisher in all of the events he participated. Won the four-mile Ragin[apos] Cajun Invitational with the third best time in school history, 19:43.24. Ran second at the 8,000-meter LSU Invitational in 25:02.26. Earned all-conference honors by finishing sixth at the Conference USA Championships with a time 24:19.7. Finished 12th at the NCAA South Central District Championships, running the 10,000-meter course in 31:39, earning all-district accolades.
Prep: A 1996 graduate of Karabet Boys High School, where he was named Athlete of the Year. Also lettered in soccer and volleyball at Karabet. Earned all-district honors in soccer and track. Also attended Mateno University for one year, where he was named track athlete of the year.
Personal: Born August 28, 1978 in Kapsabet, Kenya. The son of Eric Tunei and Emmy Chesambu. Majoring in computer information systems.
