BATON ROUGE, La. - Tulane University senior Solomon Kandie (Nairobi, Kenya) matched the best-ever finish by a Tulane athlete by finishing in third place in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday evening at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at LSU's Bernie Moore Stadium.
For the second race in a row, Kandie established a new school record in the event. He posted a time of 8:35.30 to finish third, matching his finish at the 2000 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Arkansas' Daniel Lincoln won the event with a Bernie Moore Track record time of 8:22.34. Colorado's Steve Slattery was third at 8:26.51.
Kandie earns All-America honors for the third consecutive year with his performance. Last season, he finished in eighth place in the steeplechase. The senir had set a school record on Wednesday in the preliminary heats, recording a time of 8:38.73.
The third-place finish lifts the Green Wave to six team points, which is tied for 19th overall.
In addition to Kandie's two third-place finishes in the steeplechase, Nathan Junius took third in the javelin in 2001. Green Wave Hanne Lyngstad recorded two third-place finishes: in the indoor mile and in the outdoor 1,500-meter run in 1999. Nadja Petersen finished third in the 400-meter run during the 2001 Indoor Championship.
