
Wooster Wins Illinois Amateur Golf Championship

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - After helping the Green Wave to their best finish in school history, Tulane women's golf standout Alexis Wooster continued to play at a high level as the rookie from Winnetka, Ill., won the 69th Illinois Women's Golf Association State Amateur Championship Friday at Champaign Country Club.
Wooster, a second-team All-Conference USA selection and CUSA Freshman of the Year honoree, defeated Salley Wessels of Mt. Morris, Ill, in match play to earn the title. Wooster had a two-hole lead going into the 17th before winning that hole to take a three-and-one victory.
"This is a great win for Alexis," head coach Sue Bower said. "I know she's been working on her game in the early part of the summer and I know she'll continue to play well as the summer progresses. I proud of her for her win, and her summer success bodes well for the future of our program."
With the championship, Wooster is eligible to participate in the USGA Public Links Tournament beginning Tuesday, June 18 in Sun River, Ore., where she will she will be playing against a nationwide field of public golfers, including 2002 Tulane team captain Marcela Gonzalez.
Wooster is coming off a successful freshman campaign with the Green Wave where she finished third on the squad with a 77.26 stroke average. She posted five Top 20 finishes during the 2001-02 season, including a fourth-place finish at the C-USA Championship and a third-place finish at the Green Wave Women's Golf Classic.
