NEW ORLEANS, La. - Heather Van Norman, Tulane University's first-year coach for cross country and track and field, will make her head coaching debut on Friday, September 6 with the Tulane Invitational cross country meet at Lake Oaks Park in New Orleans.
2002 Tulane Cross Country Schedule
"We started practice this morning and I am very excited to get the team together," Van Norman said. "Today was my first day seeing the cross country team as a whole and many of the runners have been working hard this summer. I hope to have a lot of fans come out to support the team in our opening meet next Friday."
Van Norman takes over the reins of the Tulane program after four years as an assistant coach at Georgia Tech. She focused on the Yellow Jacket sprints, relays and long hurdles. During that time, Georgia Tech had four top 30 finishes at the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships, while producing seven individual All-Americans and one All-America relay team.
Following the Tulane Invitational, the Wave cross country teams will run on September 13 at the Southern Miss Invitational. Hattiesburg is also the site of the Conference USA Cross Country Championships on Nov. 2.
Two top-level Louisiana meets will close the month of September as Tulane is in action at the Ragin' Cajun Invitational at UL-Lafayette (Sept. 21) and the LSU Invitational (Sept. 28).
The Auburn Bank Invitational, which regularly features over 30 schools, will be run on Oct. 19 as the Wave's final warm-up for the C-USA Championship. The Tulane men's team won the Conference USA Championship last season.
The 2002 cross country season closes with the NCAA South Central Regional (Nov. 10) and the NCAA Championship (Nov. 19). Teams and individuals must qualify for the NCAA events.
