Tulane Sweeps Southern Miss Cross Country Invite

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Tulane University women's and men's teams captured the titles at the 23rd Annual Southern Miss Cross Country Invitational on Friday afternoon at Van Hook Golf Course on Friday afternoon.
The Green Wave women totaled 60 points to edge second-place UNO, which had 66 points. UL-Monroe (114 points), Ole Miss (115) and Southern Miss rounded out the top five in the 11-team competition.
The individual women's winner was UL-Monroe's Rhonda Sherrer with a time of 18:20.91 over the 5,000-meter course. The Wave's top runner was junior Eva Lustigova (Liberec, Czech Republic), who placed fourth with a time of 19:11.81.
Tulane's men tallied 62 points for their victory, topping second-place UL-Monroe's 72 points. Southeastern Louisiana (73 points), Ole Miss (103) and Mississippi College (106) finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 12-team field.
The top finisher for the second race in a row for the Green wave was senior Adam Leskis (Spokane, Wash.), who took fourth among collegiate runners with a time of 21:39.09 over the four-mile course. The winner of the 97-runner contest was Southeastern Louisiana's Asbel Ngetich with a time of 21:07.34.
Other top finishers for the Green Wave women were sophomore Megan Whelton (New Orleans, La.) and freshman Lisa Green (Marietta, Ga.), who took 11th and 13th place, respectively in the 79-runner field. Sophomore Mandy Hopper took 14th place for the Wave.
Following Leskis for the men were sophomore Will Landry (New Iberia, La.), who was ninth with a time of 22:04.46. Sophomore Mark Williams and junior Ryan Gallagher (New Orleans, La.) placed 15th and 17th, respectively for Tulane.
Tulane returns to action next Saturday, Sept. 21, at the Ragin' Cajun Invitational in Lafayette, La.
