NEW ORLEANS, La. - Mahir Nisar has joined the Tulane University men's tennis team for the fall semester, according to head coach Robert Klein. Nisar rounds out the Green Wave roster at nine players.
Nisar, known as Mickey, is an American citizen born in New Jersey, who lived and went to high school in Pakistan. He attended the Lahore American School in Lahore, Pakistan, where he was the Student Body President, in addition to playing tennis.
"Mickey brings a great attitude to the tennis court," Klein commented. "He has a solid attacking game and is very comfortable at the net.
"He is a young guy with a lot of potential that we are glad to have as part of this team."
Nisar was among the players chosen for Pakistan's Davis Cup and has a junior world ranking in the top 500. He is among the top 16 men's players in Pakistan.
The Wave, which has made six consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament, returns its top five players from a year ago. Two-time C-USA Player of the Year Michael Kogan was also tabbed as the Louisiana Player of the Year and is ranked No. 17 in the ITA Preseason Rankings. Two-time all-conference honoree Victor Romero, a senior, is ranked No. 39 in the preseason ratings.
Tulane will open its 2002-2003 season this weekend with individuals in action at the Hurricane Invitational at the University of Tulsa. Scheduled to compete are Nisar, junior Hannu Piiroinen (Tampere, Finland) and freshman Patrizio Maucci (Neuilly, France).
