LEXINGTON, Ky. - Mattias Westerberg (Lulea, Sweden) opened his senior season with a victory in the "A" Flight of the Charles Fluitt Invitational at the University of Kentucky's Hilary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Complex on Friday.
Westerberg defeated Rishan Kuruppu from Middle Tennessee State, 6-3, 6-0 in a morning match.
The Wave's top ranked player, No. 17 Michael Kogan (Kfar-Saba, Israel), was upended by No. 9 Bobby Reynolds, 6-1, 7-6, in the first round of the "Ranked" Flight. Green Wave senior Victor Romero (Atizapan, Mexico), who is ranked No. 39 in the country, was defeated as well in the "Ranked" Flight, falling to 38th-ranked Chad Harris from Vanderbilt, 7-6, 6-4, in the opening round.
The "Ranked" Flight is made up of players currently ranked in the top 100 in the ITA rankings plus players who have been ranked sometime in their career. Each player in that flight will play five matches against others in the flight.
The A and B Flights are brackets. Players who lose will drop to consolation brackets. Each player (unless there is a bye in the bracket) will be guaranteed four matches.
Kogan and Romero both were also defeated in their second matches of the day. Romero fell to No. 69 Paul Ciorascu from Ole Miss, 6-3, 6-3, while Kogan was upended by No. 38 Chad Harris from Vanderbilt in a hard-fought three-set match, 6-1, 6-7, 6-4.
All three Green Wave players will continue action on Saturday.
Results are available throughout the day at www.UKAthletics.com, while Tulane individual results will be available at www.TulaneGreenWave.com at the end of the day.
