MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Tulane University men's tennis team suffered its first loss of the 2003 spring season with a 4-2 defeat at the hands of 19th-ranked Minnesota on Saturday evening at the Baseline Tennis Center.
Tulane, ranked No. 38 in the nation, had defeated No. 30 SMU on Friday night, but could not stop the highly-ranked Gopher attack on Saturday.
The Gophers clinched the victory when Manuel Lievano defeated his older brother, Tulane's Jorge Lievano, 7-6, 6-7, 6-3, at No. 4 singles.
Tulane had lost the doubles point despite a win at No. 1 doubles by the 29th-ranked tandem of Michael Kogan and Victor Romero, 9-8, over 49th-ranked Thomas Haug and Avery Ticer.
Kogan also had a win in singles play where he is ranked No. 32 in the nation; he upended Thomas Haug, who is No. 54 in the country.
The only other point for the Green Wave came from sophomore Dmitriy Koch, who won his second straight match at third singles.
The next match for the Green Wave will be on Feb. 9 when it hosts No. 25 Mississippi State at the Goldring Tennis Complex. Admission to all Tulane home tennis matches is free and fans also get free hot dogs and soft drinks.
