
Men's Tennis Upsets No. 24 Mississippi State

NEW ORLEANS, La. - The Tulane men's tennis team put in a full day's work on Sunday. Literally. The Green Wave's match with No. 24 Mississippi State began an hour early at 11 a.m. It completed approximately 13 hours later; in a different area code. The work paid off however, as 32nd-ranked Tulane earned a 4-1 victory over the Bulldogs.
The match was originally scheduled for noon on Sunday, but due to forecasted rain, was moved up to 11 a.m. After the open of doubles action at Goldring Stadium on the Tulane campus, the rain arrived. A lengthy delay followed but action did resume. However, the rain was not done and eventually the two teams agreed to venture across Lake Ponchartrain, aiming to complete the match at Beau Chene Country Club, approximately 40 miles from Tulane.
With just two courts available at Beau Chene, the marathon was extended still further, however, the Green Wave clinched the victory just before midnight at Beau Chene.
Junior Michael Kogan led the way for the Green Wave, winning in both singles and doubles. Sophomore Dmitri Koch and senior Mattias Westerberg teamed up for to clinch the doubles point for the Wave with an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles.
In addition to Kogan, Koch and senior Jorge Lievano picked up victories in singles action to clinch the victory for the Green Wave. Kogan and Koch had straight set victories, while Lievano went had a come-from-behind three-set victory.
The next match for the Green Wave will be on Saturday when it is in action at the Great Northwest Shooutout at the University of Washington.
