AUBURN, Ala. - The Tulane University cross country teams competed in their largest event of the year on Friday afternoon, running at the Auburn Invitational at Indian Pines Golf Course. The Green Wave women finished ninth of 32 teams, while the Wave men were 17th of 29 squads.
Once again on the women's side, the Green Wave was paced by the freshman-sophomore combination of Bessie Hatch (Ojai, Calif.) and Lisa Green (Marietta, Ga.). Hatch has led the Wave in all five of her collegiate races, including her 19th place effort on Friday, posting a time of 18:45.41 on the five-kilometer course. Green was the Wave's No. 2 finisher for the fifth race in a row, taking 30th in the 272-runner event, recording a time of 18:57.24.
For the men, senior Ryan Gallagher (New Orleans, La.) was the top Green Wave finisher, easily recording a personal-best time by clocking a time of 26:48.75 to earn 70th place in the 259-runner field. Junior Philip Aagaard (Linkoping, Sweden) was second for the Wave and 91st overall with a time of 27:05.45.
Mississippi State won the women's event with 107 points, including the top individual runner in Tiffany McWilliams, who covered the five kilometers in 17:29.93. Indiana (111 points) was second, followed by Auburn (116), Purdue (134) and Coastal Carolina (145). Tulane finished with 238 points.
The men's race was won by host Auburn, which record 127 points, followed closely by Georgia Tech (141 points), which was led by overall individual winner Kyle Rabbitt, who completed the race in 24:47.87. Tennessee (156), UT-Chattanooga (163) and Kennesaw State (175) rounded out the top five. Tulane tallied 469 points.
Other scorers for the Wave women were senior Eva Lustigova (Liberec, Czech Republic), junior Mandy Hopper (Charlotte, N.C.) and freshman Eva Gordon (Atlanta, Ga.). Lustigova placed 45th with a time of 19:22.03, while Hopper was 79th (19:52.50) and Gordon was 81st (19:54.92).
Rounding out the scorers for the men were freshmen Tyler Chapman (Flower Mound, Texas) and Kevin Martes (South Easton, Mass.) and senior Phillip Romero (Albuquerque, N.M.). Chapman was 101st with a time of 27:17.24, while Martes was 117th (27:32.21) and Romero was 144th (28:03.86).
Tulane returns to action next Friday at the Sam Houston Invitational in Huntsville, Texas.
