Bessie Hatch Wins Again for Green Wave

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - Precocious freshman Bessie Hatch (Ojai, Calif.) won her third race of her rookie season, leading the Tulane women's cross country team to victory at the Sam Houston State Invitational on Friday afternoon at Ravens Nest Golf Course. It was the final warm-up for the Green Wave before it travels to the Conference USA Cross Championship on Nov. 1 in Tampa, Fla.
Hatch posted a time of 17:45 on the three-mile course, defeating 87 other runners in the nine-team event. Hatch also has two second-place finishes this year.
The Green Wave men were paced by senior Ryan Gallagher (New Orleans, La.), who finished 16th overall in the five-mile men's race with a time of 28:15, to help the Wave to a fourth-place finish.
Following Hatch for the women was sophomore Lisa Green (Marietta, Ga.), the second finisher for Tulane in every race this year. She posted a time of 18:12 on the course. Senior Eva Lustigova (Liberec, Czech Republic) was seventh overall for the Wave at 18:17. Junior Birka Wicke (Edermunde, Germany) took 13th place, while freshman Eva Gordon (Atlanta, Ga.) was 31st to round out the scorers for the Green Wave.
Junior Philip Aagaard (Linkoping, Sweden) was the second finisher for the Wave men, taking 21st place with a time of 28:22, followed closely by senior Phillip Romero (Albuquerque, N.M.) in 23rd place at 28:23. Freshman Kevin Martes (South Easton, Mass.) and junior Will Landry (New Iberia, La.) finished 32nd and 35th to close out the Green Wave scorers.
The Green Wave women tallied 38 points in the event as they had four runners in the top 13. McNeese State came in second with 75 points while Lamar was third with 82. North Texas (91 points) and Houston (137) rounded out the top five. Other teams competing were Texas State (137), Southeastern Louisiana (167), Nicholls State (205) and Northwestern State (221).
On the men's side, host Sam Houston won the event with 40 points, followed by Louisiana Tech's 63 points and McNeese State's 105. Tulane tallied 123 points. The remainder of the field consisted of Texas (155 points), North Texas (163), Texas State (168), Northwestern State (197), Stephen F. Austin (200), Lamar (221), Nicholls State (286) and Prairie View (323).
