KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Freshman Mary Ellen Jacobs posted a career-low, one-under par 71 and the Green Wave fired a team 296 as the Tulane University women's golf team finished day one of the Mercedes-Benz Women's Championship tied for third Sunday at the Fox Den County Club, hosted by the University of Tennessee.
The Green Wave, who entered the weekend ranked No. 20 by GolfStat.com and No. 21 by Golfweek Magazine, finished the day at eight-over par and are currently tied with No. 7 Ohio State and are just five strokes behind the co-leaders Oklahoma State and the Swedish Jr. National Team. Jacobs scored three birdies on the day, and is currently just one stroke behind day-one leader Pernilla Lindberg of Sweden.
"We're pleased as a team with the way we played today," head coach Sue Bower said. "One of the things we struggled with earlier this season, and even part of last season, was getting off to a good start. Today, we were able to do that. We've had to come out on day two and play catch-up in our first two tournaments this year, but we were able to come out with a good opening round today and that makes it a lot easier to play the rest of the way."
Sophomore Liliana Alvarez finished the first 18 wholes tied for 11th with a one-over par 73. Like Jacobs, Alvarez tallied three birdies on the day as the Green Wave had nine total on Sunday. Fellow sophomore Jessica Issler was next for Tulane with a four-over par 76 to finish tied with teammate Carolin Landmann for 34th place.
Junior Alexis Wooster rounded out the Green Wave team members participating in the event, firing a plus-nine 81 to finish tied for 74th, and individual participant Maggie Cuningham finished tied for 44th with a five-over par 77.
The lone Conference USA team participating in the event, the Green Wave holds a three-stroke lead on No. 11 Georgia, a four-stroke lead over host Tennessee, the No. 23 team in the nation, and a five-stroke lead over LSU and Michigan State. Tulane also leads nationally ranked South Carolina (No. 24) by eight strokes.
Tulane and the other 16 participating teams return to action on Monday for the second round of tournament play before wrapping up the tourney on Monday with a shotgun start.
