Piiroinen and Goulet Advance to Quarterfinals at Beau Holton Invitational

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Five different schools had players advance to the quarterfinals of the Beau Holton Memorial Invitational on Friday at Tulane University's Goldring Tennis Complex. The host Green Wave had senior Hannu Piiroinen (Tampere, Finland) and freshman David Goulet (Longueil, Quebec) win two matches to remain in contention for the championship.
UNO and Southern Miss also had a pair of players in the final eight as Pierre Ros-Barbier and Nicolas Houard remain unbeaten for the Privateers and David Canudas and Juanjo Martin are both 2-0 for the Golden Eagles. Canudas won the toughest match of the day, losing the first set, 7-6, but coming back to defeat Middle Tennessee State's Andreas Siljestrom, 7-5, 6-4 in the final match of the evening.
The quarterfinal matches are slated to begin at 10 a.m. Piiroinen will battle LSU's Cory Ross in his quarterfinal match while Goulet meets Canudas from Southern Miss. UNO's Houard plays Southern Miss' Martin and Ros-Barbier looks to upend Middle Tennessee State's Trevor Short in the other quarterfinals.
Tournament doubles action will also open on Saturday.
Piiroinen advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating Thomas Funke from Southern Miss, 6-1, 6-1 and UNO's Julien de la Mettrie, 6-1, 6-3.
Goulet's trip to the quarters saw a first-round win over UNO's Saif Ali, when Ali retured due to injury while trailing 5-3 in the opening set. Goulet defeated Middle Tennessee State's Anant Sitaram, 7-6, 6-4 in the round of 16.
Green Wave sophomore Patrizio Maucci opened the tourney with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Greg Pollack from Middle Tennessee State, but fell to Southern Miss' Martin, 6-3, 6-0 in the second round. Tulane's Maxime Lacroix also opened with a victory, stopping Mark Lux from Southern Miss, 6-3, 6-3. However, Lacroix was knocked out by Middle Tennessee's Short, 6-1, 7-5.
