NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane track and field and cross country coach Heather Van Norman has announced her second recruit of the early period as distance standout Aubrey Phillips has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Green Wave program.
Phillips is a three-time all-state selection in track and field and a two-time all-state honoree in cross country from Woodlawn High School in Baton Rouge, La.
"Aubrey is a hidden gem with incredible potential," Van Norman said. "She is going to come in and contribute right away. I am very excited to have her as part of our program."
The 2001 Class 4A State Champion in the 1600 meters as a freshman, Phillips earned second in the state for Class 5A in both the 1600 and the 3200-meter runs as a sophomore and junior. She also won regional and district titles in the 1600 and the 3200.
During the indoor season, Phillips was the 2001 state runner-up in the 3000-meter run, while earning second place in the state in the 1500-meter run in 2002.
"Louisiana is full of talent in all areas of track and field," Van Norman said. "We are very pleased to attract an in-state runner of Aubrey's caliber to Tulane."
Tulane will open its track and field season on Saturday, Dec. 6 when it hosts a preseason meet at the Westfeldt Complex.
