WILMINGTON, N.C. - Senior Carolin Landmann fired an even-par 72 and freshman Mary Ellen Jacobs shot a one-over 73 as the Tulane University women's golf team finished second at the Landfall Tradition with an 895 (300-296-299) Sunday afternoon at the par-72, 6,135-yard County Club of Landfall-Nicklaus.
Jacobs' three-round, one-over par 217 was good enough for her to finish tied for second in the individual race, just one stroke behind medalist Amanda McCurdy of Arkansas. The Tulane team, finished just four strokes off the lead as New Mexico held off the Green Wave rally over the final two rounds to take home the team title with an 891 (291-304-296).
"This team played their hearts out all weekend," head coach Sue Bower said. "We played tough all three rounds, and this is really the first time we've done that all year. And you have to tip your hats to New Mexico. They're No. 5 team in the country for a reason, and for our team to hang with them the way we did, is a good sign."
"I'm proud of the way we played and I'm excited about the rest of the season. Mary Ellen is playing outstanding golf, and she's just a freshman. Carolin and Lindsay (Hulwick) also had big weekends. If we can just keep improving, there's no telling what this team can achieve."
Landmann (75-76-72) finished second on the team to Jacobs, tying teammate Hulwick (76-72-75)for eighth overall with 223s. Sophomores Liliana Alvarez and Jessica Issler rounded out the Green Wave competitors, finishing tied for 32nd and 37th with scores of 232 (77-76-79) and 235 (80-76-79), respectively.
With the fall portion of its schedule completed, the Green Wave return to action on Feb. 9 when they play host to the 2003 Tulane Invitational at English Turn. Tulane has won each of the last two tournaments it hosted, and the event is one of a select few tournaments to feature both men's and women's teams playing simultaneously.
