TAMPA, Fla. - Tulane University opened play at the Conference USA Shootout on Saturday with a 6-1 victory over UAB at the University of South Florida's Varsity Tennis Courts.
It is the third straight win for the 29th-ranked Green Wave, which had a first-round bye in the event. UAB had stopped Charlotte in its opening match on Saturday morning.
Tulane won the doubles point to get things started. Michael Kogan and Victor Romero, who hold the No. 7 ranking in the nation in doubles, rolled to an 8-2 win at top flight doubles. After UAB won the No. 3 slot, Tulane's Mattias Westerberg and Dmitriy Koch held off the Blazers for an 8-6 win at No. 2.
In singles, Kogan won his seventh straight set, knocking off Bastian Grundler, 6-2, 6-1. Westerberg and Hannu Piiroinen also had straight-set triumphs, while Romero and Patrizio Maucci gutted out three-set victories to account for the final margin.
The Green Wave will take on top-seeded USF, which is ranked No. 21 in the country, on Sunday afternoon at 12:30 in the championship match. UAB will battle Memphis at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
