PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Tulane University was part of one of the largest and most prestigious track and field events this weekend as its women's track team participated in the 109th running of the Penn Relays at Franklin Park.
In its 108-year history, the Penn Relays have provided competition for more athletes than any other track meet in the world. During the past 10 years, more than 100,000 young men and women from high schools, colleges, clubs, the armed services, preparatory schools, junior high schools, middle schools, parochial schools, and elementary schools have competed at the carnival. The athletes range in age from under eight to over 80.
This year, during some 33 hours of competitive racing on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, more than 425 races were run, an average of more than one race every five minutes.
Tulane had four relay teams participating and one individual competing in the triple jump. All four relays teams recorded season-bests for the Green Wave.
Sophomore Lissie Mo recorded a jump of 36 feet, 11 inches to finish 18th in the triple jump, while the top relay performance was turned in by the distance medley relay team of Lisa Green, Aisha Otori, Cralyne Pradieu and Birka Wicke, who posted a time of 12:10.97.
Tulane returns to action on Saturday, competing at the Tiger Twilight Classic in Baton Rouge.
