ATLANTA, Ga. - Tulane University track and field coach Heather Van Norman made her first return to Georgia Tech on Saturday, guiding the Green Wave at the Yellow Jacket Invitational at George C. Griffin Track. Van Norman had spent three seasons at Georgia Tech as an assistant coach before taking over the reins of the Green Wave program last summer.
Sophomore Jelena Jurlina, the Co-Athlete-of-the-Week in Conference USA last week, and junior Birka Wicke both won events in the meet. Jelena took first place in the javelin with a regional-qualifying distance of 144 feet, five inches, while Wicke posted the fourth-best time in school history in the 5,000 meters at 17:36.63.
Jelena also earned third place in the discus with a throw of 160 feet, eight inches and ninth place in the shot put with a heave of 42 feet, three and a quarter inches. Sophomore Lissie Mo had her personal best triple jump of 38 feet even, while junior Carlyne Pradieu earned sixth place amongst collegiate runners in the 800 with a time of 2:14.21.
Van Norman has another homecoming of sorts next Saturday as she will guide the Green Wave track team to her alma mater for the LSU Invitational.
