CLEMMONS, N.C. - Sophomore Lindsay Hulwick shot an even-par 71 and the Green Wave fired a 223 for the second consecutive day, but it was not enough as the Tulane University women's golf team finished 11th at the NCAA East Regional with a plus-43 895.
With the top eight teams reaching the NCAA Championship Tournament in West Lafayette, Ind., the Green Wave finished just six strokes off the mark as Florida State claimed the last spot with a plus-37 889. Also advancing to the national tournament are Duke, Georgia, Vanderbilt, Auburn, Arizona, North Carolina and South Carolina.
"I'm very proud of the way our team played here at the Regional," head coach Sue Bower said. "We got off to a rough start on Thursday, but the members of this team refused to give in and played well over the final 54 holes.
"It's disappointing not to advance to nationals, but this in no way takes away from what kind of season we had. For the second consecutive year, we set a team record in strokes per round, we claimed our highest national ranking ever, and we had the Conference USA Freshman of the Year for the second consecutive season. This is only a sign of the things to come as the program continues to take leaps and bounds forward."
Hulwick led the team with a 10-over par 223 (80-72-71) to finish tied for 34th, two strokes better than freshman Liliana Alvarez (76-75-74) and senior Kathy Schafer (79-72-74) who fired plus-12 225s to finish the tournament tied for 40th. Junior Carolin Landmann was next with a 17-over par 230 (74-77-79) to finish tied for 68th, and sophomore Alexis Wooster rounded out the Green Wave five with a plus-19 232 (84-74-74) to finish tied for 75th.
Top-seeded Duke won the team title with a five-over par 857 (288-286-283), eight strokes better than Georgia (294-290-281) and Vanderbilt (295-288-282) which finish tied for second with plus-13 865s. Brandi Jackson of Furman took home the individual crown with an eight-under par 205 (68-71-66), four strokes better than runner-up Kristi McPherson of South Carolina (68-71-70).
