GAINESVILLE, Fla. - - The Tulane women's tennis season came to a close on Wednesday as freshman Julie Smekodub dropped her match in the singles draw, while she and Jenny Kuhn lost in the doubles portion of the NCAA Tournament at Florida's Ring Tennis Complex.
Smekodub, a freshman from Brooklyn, N.Y., dropped a 6-1, 6-2 decision to California's Racquel Kops-Jones in the Round of 16 of the singles draw, but earned All-America status by virtue of her place in the final 16. Smekodub is currently ranked 33rd by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, while Kops-Jones is ranked sixth.
"It just wasn't my day in singles," Smekodub said. " I have beaten her before, but today I just didn't come up with the right shots."
Smekodub and Kuhn then lost a 6-4, 6-1 match to the No. 2 ranked team of Lori Grey and Agata Cioroch from Georgia in the Round of 16 of the doubles competition. Kuhn and Smekodub are ranked 10th by the ITA in doubles, while Grey and Cioroch are ranked second nationally.
"They are a really good team," Kuhn said. "We fought hard, but they came out better today."
