Kogan Has Straight-Set Win at NCAA's

ATHENS, Ga. - Junior Michael Kogan won his first round match at the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championship on Wednesday morning at the University of Georgia.
Kogan, the three-time Player of the Year in Conference USA, is one of sixty-four singles competitors in the event. He and Victor Romero will also form one of 32 teams in the NCAA Doubles Championships, which begin on Thursday.
The victory for Kogan is his 13th in a row in singles action. He cruised to a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Ohio State's Vincent Ng, who is ranked No. 38 in the nation. Kogan holds the No. 11 ranking in the country. The junior will play Robert Kowalczyk from Cal on Thursday, Kowalczyk, who is ranked No. 57 in the nation, topped Nicholas Monroe from North Carolina, 7-5, 6-4, in the opening round.
In doubles action, Kogan and Romero own the No. 5 seed in the tournament. They will battle the 26th-ranked tandem in the nation, Prakash Amritraj and Daniel Langre from USC on Thursday at a time to be determined. The winner of that match advances to play the winner of the match between Andrew Golub and Colin Purcell from Miami and Jean Simon and Jose Zarhi from Texas. The Miami pair hold the No. 30 ranking in the nation, while the Longhorn team is No. 20.
Tulane, which holds the No. 15 ranking in the nation as a team, closed its 2003 season with a 21-6 record, establishing a school record for victories.
