NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University head women's golf coach Sue Bower was named East Region Coach of the Year by the National Golf Coaches Association, and Bower, junior Carolin Landmann and rookie Liliana Alvarez were tabbed Coach, Player and Freshman of the Year, respectively, by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
Bower, who just completed her 11th season at the helm of the Green Wave program, has led her team to three NCAA Regional appearances in the past four years, including back-to-back postseason appearances in 2002 and again this year. During the 2002-03 season, the Green Wave doubled the all-time tournament victory total with tourney wins at the USF/Beacon Woods Invitational, the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate and the Tulane Invitational.
Landman, Alvarez and sophomore Lindsay Hulwick were also named first-team All-Louisiana, and were joined on the five-member squad by Vicky Meyer of LSU and Tessie Simar of McNeese State. Landmann became the first player since Pam Buff in 1999 to be named Player of the Year, and Alvarez becomes the third Green Wave golfer to claim LSWA rookie honors, joining Pam Buff in 1998 and current teammate Alexis Wooster in 2002. Bower, meanwhile, claims Coach of the Year honors for the second straight year while also winning the award in 2000.
"Winning the East region coach of the year is very flattering," Bower said. "I appreciate my fellow East Region coaches for acknowledging the success of Tulane Women's Golf.
"Carolin, Lili and Lindsay had excellent seasons for the Green Wave. Their recognition is very deserving. With five of my top six players returning for the 2003-04 season and a solid recruiting class, the foundation is in place for even more success in years to come."
The trio, along with the other seven members of the 2002-03 squad helped set a Tulane single-season record by averaging 299.38 strokes per round. The new low eclipses the former mark of 304.74 set last season.
While Landmann was named LSWA Player of the Year, it was Hulwick that wound up leading the team with a 74.71 stroke average, including her first career tournament victory at the 2003 Tulane Invitational. She shot par or better on seven occasions, including a season-best 70 in the third round of the Beacon Woods Invitational.
Landmann finished second on the team with a 74.91 average per 18 holes and shared the individual tournament title with Alvarez at the USF/Beacon Woods Invitational. She fired par or better four times, including a school-record 67 in the third round at Beacon Woods.
Alarez, meanwhile, finished just 10 strokes off the team lead and third on the squad with a 75.03 average. She shared the tourney title at Beacon Woods and shot par or better six times.
