NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane head track and field and cross country coach Heather Van Norman has announced the hiring of Mike Corn as the program's assistant coach for distance events. A New Orleans native, Corn has coached at the high school level for 16 years.
"Mike has extensive experience and success in the coaching profession and we are very excited to add him to our staff," Van Norman said. "In addition, his contacts in the New Orleans area will be an asset to our program."
Corn will work directly with the Green Wave men's and women's cross country teams, as well as coordinating training for the women's indoor and outdoor track distance competitors.
A 1986 graduate of the University of New Orleans, Corn began his coaching career as an assistant for four years at Holy Cross School. He served as the head cross country coach and an assistant track and field coach from 1991 to 2002 at Archbishop Rummel High School, his alma mater. His cross country teams at Rummel regularly finished in the top five in the state, including a Louisiana Championship in 1996 and a second-place finish in 2000.
Last year, he held the head cross country position at Covington High School.
"I am very excited to have the opportunity to coach at the Division I level," Corn said. "It is something I have wanted to do for a long time. I am looking forward to working with the excellent coaching staff at Tulane as well as the tremendous student-athletes."
In addition to his high school experience, Corn works for the USA Track and Field Coaching Education program. He holds a USA Track and Field Level 3 Coaching Certification, the highest level of certification offered by the nation's governing body. There are currently less than 150 coaches nationwide that are Level 3 certified.
Tulane will open its 2003 cross campaign on Friday, Sept. 5 with the Tulane Invitational.
