NEW ORLEANS, La. - - The Tulane women's swimming team has been back in action for just a few short months, but one freshman already has gained worlds of experience.
Freshman Linda McEachrane competed in the Pan-American games for her native Trinidad & Tobago, finishing in the Top 20 in four different events.
"International competition is a good way to prepare for Division I competition," Tulane head coach Daniella Irle said. "Linda got to race some of the best swimmers in the world. That is a benefit to her and this team, any way you look at it."
McEachrane's best finish came with the Trinidad & Tobago 4x100 medley relay team, which finished sixth. She also competed with the 4x100 freestyle relay team, which turned in an eighth place showing.
In individual events, McEachrane finished 10th in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 26.92 and 19th in the 100-meter freestyle.
"I felt I swam well, though I didn't have my best times," McEachrane said. "It was my biggest meet of the year and I was overall happy with my performance. Watching the more experience swimmers deal with conditions and pressure helped me learn how to handle similar situations in the future."
"Success can not always be measured in best times," Irle added. "Sometimes it can be measured by what you learn or gain from an experience. I think she gaines a lot from being at that level."
The Tulane women's swimming team, which is competing this season for the first time in nearly 13 years, open the 2003-04 campaign with a two-day meet at Rice University on October 17-18.
