NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University will host the 2003 Tulane Invitational Cross Country Meet at Lake Oaks Park in New Orleans on Friday afternoon.
Lake Oaks Park is located at the end of Elysian Fields Avenue at Lake Ponchartrain.
The invitational will mark the start of Tulane head coach Heather Van Norman's second season directing the Green Wave men's and women's programs. In 2002, the Tulane women won three meets, including the Tulane Invitational. Senior Eva Lustigova was the top runner for the Wave; despite battling injuries, she finished third in one race and fourth twice. Tulane's men's team also won three meets last year; senior Ryan Gallagher is the top returnee for that squad.
Friday's women's race will cover a two-mile course and will start at 5 p.m., while the three-mile men's race will begin at approximately 5:30 p.m. (after the women's contest).
Nine schools will send men's and women's teams to the event. Joining Tulane will be the Xavier, Loyola, LSU, Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech, Southeastern Louisiana, Nicholls State and UL-Lafayette.
In last year's contest, Tulane's women won the event with 51 points, narrowly edging the 57 points of UNO. The Wave women also won in 2001. On the men's side, LSU, which had four of the top seven finishers, had 28 points for first place last season. The Green Wave finished in third place.
Results will be available at www.TulaneGreenWave.com by approximately 8 p.m.
