NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University senior Michael Kogan, the three-time Player of the Year for Conference USA, is ranked No. 7 in the nation in singles in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Preseason Rankings.
In addition to Kogan, junior Dmitriy Koch holds the No. 90 ranking in the country. Kogan and freshman David Goulet are rated No. 14 in the ITA's Preseason Doubles Rankings.
"We are pleased with the rankings; they reflect a lot on our success from last year," Tulane head coach Robert Klein said. "We are happy to have our players recognized, both in singles and doubles. It allows them to participate in some national tournaments this fall. Right now, we are just excited to get our season underway."
For his career, Kogan has recorded a 93-22 record in singles; last spring, he lost just three matches, all to nationally-ranked players. He advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals to earn All-America honors last year before falling to the fourth-ranked player in the country. He was perhaps even more impressive in doubles play, teaming with then-senior Victor Romero to climb to No. 5 in the country and post a 26-2 record in the spring. This season he will team with highly-touted freshman newcomer Goulet, a top-rated junior player in Canada.
Koch made his debut with the Green Wave last spring, tallying a 16-5 record in singles, primarily from the third position in the Wave lineup. The junior has not lost a singles match since March 5 of last spring, a stretch of 17 matches; during that time he won 11 matches while six did not finish.
Tulane, which won a school record 21 matches last year, opens its 2003-04 season on Sept. 19, with individuals participating in the Auburn Invitational. The Green Wave made its first trip to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen last season; it was Tulane's eighth consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament.
