Hello Tulane Swimming and Diving fans!
We had a great opener this past weekend at Florida State University. In addition to competing against FSU, we also competed against University of North Florida and Florida A&M. Although we took a loss to a very strong FSU program (#17 at 2004 NCAA Meet) we had two very commanding wins over UNF and FA&M.
I thought we had some really great races and the effort and determination that the team competed with was excellent. Our primary focus for the last 8 weeks for both the swimmers and the diver has been to master the "little things" or the "basics" as I like to call them. All the hard work we have put into the season and talent we have will not be fully realized if we are sloppy technically and mentally. So, there has been a large emphasis placed on perfecting turns (approach and exit from walls), head positions, streamlining of course, basic necessary stroke techniques (distance per stoke) as well as developing the mental side of our game. These are the elements that will help us win a conference championship and we wanted to race this weekend with that in mind. I think overall we did a good job. We still have some areas that need continued improvement but we also have some areas that I feel we have mastered the "basics" both physically and mentally.
Overall this meet was a great way to start off the year. We are going to be a VERY good team in due time. The key for us at this point is to be patient and stay focused and let the great performances come to us. As I tell the ladies - we must "stay the course" and have confidence in what we do every day by doing things well every day.
Listed below are a few of the highlights from the meets.
2 Lifetime Best Performances:
Danielle Carrillo - 3 meter diving - 210.9
Samantha Berdine - 200 Breaststroke - 2:28.34

The next two weeks of training we will be moving into a full schedule. Our swimming volume will finally near its normal season ceiling and the dryland and running will continue in a similar pattern as it has been. In the weight room we will be transitioning into a Power Phase for the Sprinters and Middle Distance ladies while the Distance ladies will transition into an Endurance Phase. For our lone diver, she will continue in the same manner she has been with her schedule. More of the basics and continued development of her 1 and 3 meter lists. OF course, basic physical fitness development will continue for her as well.
We return to action in two weeks with a home meet on Saturday, October 30th against University of Arkansas (SEC) and UNO. The meet is at 10:30am and I hope that you can make it out to cheer on the Green Wave! If not, just keep good and positive thoughts for us.
