NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane freshman Sarah Dicharry was named Conference USA Swimmer of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday after the Green Wave swept SEC opponent Arkansas and cross-town foe UNO over the weekend at the Reily Student Recreation Center.
A native of Gonzalez, La., and 2004 graduate of St. Joseph's Academy, Dicharry posted a pair of wins on Saturday while setting school records in both the 200-yard freestyle and the 400-yard freestyle relay. The weekly honor is the first of Dicharry's career, and she becomes the second Tulane student-athlete to earn C-USA Swimmer of the Week honors as current sophomore Leslie Christian earned the distinction back on Feb. 10.
"In a word, Sarah was awesome this weekend," head coach Daniella Irle said. "We knew when we signed her that she had the potential to be a key contributor to our team, and she really confirmed our belief in her ability.
"When your program is as young as ours, you're going to have to rely on your freshmen to perform beyond their experience. It's been someone new almost every weekend in our first two seasons, and it will be exciting to see who does it next."
Dicharry's time of 1:52.47 was a lifetime best and won the event by more than three seconds over second-place finisher and fellow rookie Samantha Berdine. Dicharry also anchored the 400 free relay, which Tulane won by over six seconds (3:30.67) in the final event of the meet to clinch the victory, posting a 52.16 split.
In addition, Dicharry also finished third in the 100-yard freestyle with a lifetime best time of 52.86, which was just six-tenths of a second out of first place.
Dicharry and the Green Wave return to action on Saturday, Nov. 6, when they travel to Little Rock, Ark., to take on North Texas, Henderson State and host Arkansas-Little Rock at 11 a.m.
