LAFAYETTE, La. - For the second men's tennis match in a row, Tulane University fell by a narrow 4-3 margin, this time being defeated by UL-Lafayette at the Cajun Courts. The Green Wave drops to 4-3 with the loss.
Tulane won the doubles point to open the match as senior Michael Kogan and freshman David Goulet had an 8-4 win at No. 1 and newcomers Jacobo Hernandez and Alberto Sottocorno won 9-8 at No. 3.
However, in singles action, the Ragin' Cajuns prevailed. Tulane junior Dmitriy Koch, ranked No. 37 in the nation, improved to 5-0 this spring with a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles. Senior Hannu Piiroinen also won, taking a 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 decision at No. 4.
However, losses at No. 1, No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6 gave the Cajuns the victory.
Tulane returns to action next weekend, hosting the Conference USA Shootout. The event opens on Friday with Memphis playing Southern Miss at 10 a.m. and UAB battling Saint Louis at 2 p.m. at the Goldring Tennis Stadium. Tulane plays on Saturday at noon against the winner of the Memphis-Southern Miss match.
