Green Wave Track Takes Third at UNO Invitational

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Juniors Jelena Jurlina and Helmi Leppanen led Tulane University to third place at the UNO Outdoor Track and Field Invitational on Saturday at Tad Gormley Stadium.
Jurlina won two events, qualifying for the NCAA Regionals in both, while Leppanen broke the school record in the shot put. Tulane, which rested its top sprinters, recorded 103 points to finish behind Troy State (140 points) and Southern University (124) in the 13-team meet.
Leppanen recorded a school-record 46 feet, four inches in the shot put to take first place in the event, followed closely be Jurlina's heave of 45 feet, 11 and three-quarters inches which matches the previous school record set in 1991 by Tracy Harris.
Jurlina also won the discus with a throw of 160 feet, one inch and the javelin with a throw of 153 feet, nine inches. Her effort in the discus was the fifth-best in school history.
The Green Wave also received first-place performances from senior Birka Wicke and junior Lissie Mo. Wicke won the 800-meter run with a personal-best time of 2:14.85, while Mo's long-jumped 18 feet, 10 inches for the victory.
Tulane added two other second-place finishes and three thirds. Senior Carlyne Pradieu was second in the 800, followed by Eva Lustigova in third. Freshman Nicole Sauer took second in the hammer throw, senior Jillian Green was third in the triple jump and freshman Christina Tegbe took third in the triple jump.
The Green Wave returns to action on March 26-27 at the Tiger Relays in Baton Rouge, La.
