NEW ORLEANS, La. - - ** This match was ruled a "no-contest" by the ITA which upheld Tulane's protest due to improper roster moves by Wake Forest. The individual results are valid, however, there will be no win or loss for either team.**
Freshman Andrew Hamar came back from a set down to claim a thrilling three-set match on court four to clinch No. 54 Wake Forest's 4-3 win over No. 40 Tulane at the Goldring Tennis Center on Tuesday.
The loss snapped a three-match winning streak for the Green Wave, dropping the squad to 7-4 on the season. Wake Forest, meanwhile, improves to 5-5 on the season.
Tulane looked in command early, winning matches on courts one and three to claim the opening doubles point. The Green Wave tandem of Kogan and Goulet posted an 8-3 win over the Deamon Deacon duo of Loewenthal and Spice at the No. 1 spot, while Tulane's Hernandez and Sottocorno were 8-2 winners of Wake's Paul and Simpson on court three.
However, Wake Forest came back with a trio of three-set wins in singles play, culminating with Hamar's heroics on court four. Tulane got wins from 72nd-ranked Dmitriy Koch and Alberto Sottocorno on courts two and six, respectively, but it was not enough to hold off the Demon Deacons.
Wake's Derrick Spice, ranked 68th by the ITA, held off a late charge from Tulane All-American Michael Kogan, himself ranked 9th, to post a 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles. With the team score tied at 3-3, Hamar rallied past Piiroinen after falling in the first set, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
Tulane returns to action on March 11, as the Green Wave travel to Mobile, Ala., for the annual Blue-Gray Invitational.
