Depth Lifts Men's Tennis to C-USA Quarterfinal Win

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - With two nationally-ranked singles team and one doubles tandem ranked, the Tulane University men's tennis team was primed to roll at the top of the lineup. In its quarterfinal match at the Conference USA Men's Championship on Friday afternoon, the Green Wave defeated East Carolina, 4-0, with wins from the bottom of its lineup, and none from its ranked players.
Tulane (16-4), the No. 2 seed in the tournament, advances to play host and No. 6 seed Memphis, which upset No. 4 USF in the quarterfinals, at noon on Saturday. The Green Wave is ranked No. 18 in the country and is looking for its eighth straight NCAA Tournament appearance.
The Green Wave opened Friday's match by earning the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 flights. Goran Vasiljevic and Alberto Sottocorno notched an 8-2 win at No. 2 and Hannu Piiroinen and Jacobo Hernandez had an 8-4 win at No. 3. Tulane's tandem of Michael Kogan and David Goulet, ranked No. 35 in the nation, did not complete their match.
In singles play, three newcomers picked up victories for the Wave, while the 13th-ranked Kogan and No. 79 Dmitriy Koch did not complete their matches at No. 1 and No. 2 singles.
Freshman Alberto Sottocorno lifted the Wave to a 2-0 advantage with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles, while sophomore transfer Jacobo Hernandez dispatched his foe by a 6-1, 6-0 score at No. 5. Hernandez is now 13-4 this season.
The match was clinched by freshman Ted Angelinos, who had a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.
